Deadline Extensions

The Air Quality Directive allows the member states to extend the deadlines set for compliance with limit values by sending a notification to the EU Commission.

However, at the same time, measures for implementing the Directive have become stricter. Time extensions for a specific region are only possible under the condition that a corresponding air quality plan has been drawn up, showing how the limit values may be complied with before the new deadline expires. The member state has then to prove that all appropriate measures have been taken at national, regional and local levels to meet the deadline.

With respect to particulate matter, a three-year extension of the deadline had been possible, i.e. to 10 June 2011. Deadline extensions for compliance with the limit values for NO2 will end in the year 2015. However, most applications to this end were rejected.
